E-mail Spam Filtering & CPANEL SpamAssassin.

Apache SpamAssassin is an anti-spam platform giving system administrators a filter to classify email and block spam (unsolicited bulk email). It uses a robust scoring framework and plug-ins to integrate a wide range of advanced heuristic and statistical analysis tests on email headers and body text including text analysis, Bayesian filtering, DNS blocklists, and collaborative filtering databases. This can be turned on / off from CPANEL and offers various configuration settings.

ACCESSING:

To access SpamAssassin and turn it on / off or configure, go to your hosting CPANEL, login, then scroll down to MAIL > and click on “Apache SpamAssassin”. Click “Enable Apache SpamAssassin” button, then configure this as you desire:
1. SCORE: There is various criteria that gives each email “points”. The score determines what score it must have to be cleared as legitimate email. A guide to this includes:
– 0: everything incoming will be marked as spam.
– 5: the default middle setting (most common for typical users)
– 10: the lowest setting, which will barely filter out any spam.
We recommend you leave this at 5, or maybe 4 at lowest.
2.. AUTO-DELETE SPAM: This function automatically will delete any emails that are flagged as spam by the filters. We recommend to ONLY enable this option if you set your score to 4 or above, else you run a high risk of legitimate emails getting deleted.
3. SPAM BOX: This option allows you to have all spam emails pushed to a spam folder it will create for each email address you host with us. To access this spam folder:
– if using one of the CPANEL webmail programs, create a new folder called “spam” all lowercase.
– if using computer software like MS OUTLOOK with IMAP setup, search for how to “subscribe to folders”.

MANAGING YOUR BLOCKLIST:

If you are having issues with the spam filter flagging emails as spam that you don’t wish it to, you can manage your blocklist / whitelist by going into SpamAssassin settings. Click into MAIL > APACHE SPAMASSASSIN > then click on “Configure Apache SpamAssassin”. From this screen you can easily add / remove email accounts and full domains for permanent blocking or whitelists.
– To add a full domain to whitelist / blocklist, add *@somesite.com and all emails from that will now pass through / or be blocked. Please ensure to NOT do this for public email or ISP accounts like yahoo.com, gmail.com, aol.com, Comcast.net, etc. else it will apply that for all emails, then save.
– To add a single email address to whitelist / blocklist, simply add their email address into either whitelist or blocklist, then save.
