How to do a CPANEL restoration of my website / MySQL databases?

You can perform a full backup on your website account, but cPanel doesn’t allow restorations using the full backup file. You can download and restore the following components using CPANEL tools; home directory, MySQL databases, email forwarders, email filters.

If this suits your needs, then read on. Else if you need a full account restoration, please contact us today via a trouble ticket and we can help.

OPTION 1 – Do It Yourself

This option is for users who are a bit more comfortable working with organizing downloads and uploads. After logging into CPANEL, follow these instructions. You can do this via yoursite.com/cpanel/.

1. Choose and download backup files: After login to CPANEL scroll down to FILES section and click on BACKUP. Here you will see the types of backup components you can create & download. These include:

  • Download a Home Directory Backup: If you need to restore any of your website files or emails, click on the “Home Directory” button to download a home directory backup.
  • Download a MySQL Database Backup: If you need to restore your database from a previous backup, then click on the name of your database(s) to download.
  • Download Email Forwarders / Email Filters: If you need to restore emails forwarders or email filters, click on your domain under these headings to download those file(s).

2. Restoration: Ensure the files you downloaded from the previous step are fully downloaded before continuing, else the restorations won’t work and you will have to start over.

  • Restore A Home Directory: On the backup page in the right column look for “Restore A Home Directory Backup”, click on the “browse” button to locate the file on your computer, then click the “upload” button and follow the steps to complete.
  • Restore A MySQL Database: On the backup page in the right column look for “Restore A MySQL Database Backup”, click on the browse button to locate the file on your computer, then click the “upload” button and follow the steps to complete. For each database file you have, repeat this step.
  • Restore Email Forwarders: On the backup page in the right column look for “Restore Email Forwarders”, click on the browse button to locate the file on your computer, then click the “upload” button and follow the steps to complete. For each file you have, repeat this step.
  • Restore Email Filters: On the backup page in the right column look for “Restore Email Filters”, click on the browse button to locate the file on your computer, then click the “upload” button and follow the steps to complete. For each file you have, repeat this step.

Common FAQs

Why can’t I do a full website restoration myself?
For security purposes to avoid someone completely replacing your site with a different site, CPANEL only allows you to restore some portions of the site (i.e. home directory, email accounts, MySQL database, etc.). Thus it is necessary for us to do the full restoration.

How long does this normally take?
Average completion time of this request is within 1 business day.
