Why is additional RAM so expensive monthly for a server when I can buy it cheaper?

There are many factors taken into account which determines the pricing our data center sets extra server RAM at.

Dedicated Managed vs. Colocation Servers:
A dedicated managed server is essentially leased from the data center and fully managed so that if any of the hardware goes bad like RAM, our data center has the components on hand to instantly replace them. With colocation servers, you ship us your own server tower and hardware.

Type of RAM:
The type of RAM also plays a factor into the monthly cost, as different types of RAM cost different amounts and in order to ensure enough of your specific server required RAM is available should there be a need to swap it out if it fails. There is DDR2, DDR3, and SOLID STATE RAM.

While RAM could be purchased less expensively for your own computer, with dedicated managed servers there are allot more factors involved since this is a “leased managed” solution. These factors include:
1. For every RAM chip installed on a server, our data center purchases 1-2 more identical ones for fastest possible swap out / limited downtime.
2. The monthly cost also includes labor needed for doing swap out if needed 24/7.
3. With increased RAM, there is also increased BANDWIDTH and POWER usage. As such this extra cost helps us to cover those costs.
